LGBT ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDERS CELEBRATE COMMUNITY LEADERS AND ORGANIZATIONS
Trang Duong, Joseph Truong, South Asian Americans Leading Together, and Metro Weekly to receive awards at May 10 event marking Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
WASHINGTON D.C. – Local organizations serving and supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Asian/Pacific Islander (A/PI) communities will honor Trang Duong, Joseph Truong, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) and Metro Weekly for their work to empower the community during their ninth annual Pride & Heritage celebration. Emerging leaders Ninad Jog of KhushDC, Linh Hoang of AQUA and Hyacinth Alvaran of APIQS will round out the evening’s list of awardees. The celebration will take place at Club Apex, 1415 22nd Street NW, in Washington D.C. on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 6:30 PM.
Trang Duong likes to be "part of the solution" and is involved with several DC-metro area community organizations, including Asian/ Pacific Islander Queer Sisters (APIQS), Lesbian Services Program (LSP), and Pride & Heritage. As Co-Chair of APIQS, Trang has revitalized APIQS with Second Saturday events and implemented a partnership with the A/PI Domestic Violence Resource Project to conduct anti-homophobia trainings. Currently, she works as a physician assistant (PA) for a community health center in D.C. Trang also practices her skills as secretary and newsletter diva for her professional organization, the Lesbian, Bisexual and Gay Physician Assistance Caucus.
Joseph Truong has worked with and supported the community both professionally and personally for the past 8 years. He is proud to have chaired AQUA, metro Washington DC's gay/bisexual Asian men's group, and has helped lead the coalition building among the local LGBT API community groups, an effort to create a collaboration that would eventually become more formally recognized as Pride & Heritage. Professionally, he has worked with National Youth Advocacy Coalition (NYAC) for 4 years, DC-MAPS (DC Men of Asia Prevention Study) at Georgetown University, and he is currently a project officer with Management Systems International, an international development firm based in Washington, DC.
SAALT is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to fostering civic and political empowerment among South Asians in the United States. A staffed organization with an office in the Washington DC metro area, SAALT reaches its mission through policy analysis and advocacy; community education; coalition building; and leadership development. SAALT's programs and policy advocacy use a social justice framework with an emphasis on identifying and addressing issues affecting marginalized members of our community, as reflected by the experiences and guidance of local community-based organizations and advocates.
Metro Weekly published its first issue on Thursday, May 4, 1994 with the goal of providing the D.C. gay and lesbian community with a magazine that was both entertaining and informative. While the first issue was produced at a dining room table by Randy Shulman and Sean Bugg, it grew quickly, assembling a small staff of talented and dedicated writers, designers and photographers that established Metro Weekly as one of the most vibrant gay publications in the nation. The magazine went on to win numerous awards for journalism, design and community service. During its 14 years of publication, Metro Weekly has grown to meet the changing needs of the D.C. metro area GLBT community.
“SAALT has found a way to be socially active in an inclusive framework and systematically connect local issues to national and global trends. They have worked hard to create a space and voice for the LGBT community in their multi-layered projects. In DC, Metro Weekly has been a central medium for community news and has been exemplary in consistently covering diverse LGBT issues specific to the API community.” said Daniel Phoenix Singh, a Pride & Heritage committee member. We are excited to be honoring these wonderful community members and organizations.
“Both Trang and Joseph have served as personal and professional role models for the Queer A/PI community. We’re very proud that we can come together and celebrate their many contributions and unwavering support,” said Pride & Heritage committee member Benjamin De Gusman.
This event is a collaboration of Asian/Pacific Islander Queer Sisters (APIQS), Asian/Pacific Islander Queers United for Action (AQUA), KhushDC, and the D.C. Chapter of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF-DC). Since 2000, local organizations have put on programming and celebrating API lgbt leaders and communities during May, recognized federally as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
